There is no other way to put it than, “I love animals”. I have always had a connection to pets, and my parents always laugh because my first word was ‘cat’. Maybe they should have seen it coming? 😉
I have been very fortunate to share my life with many amazing animals over the years, whether by owning pets, rescuing, fostering, or adopting. I currently have 4 guinea pigs, and three wonderful dogs who make me smile and laugh each day.
When it came to choosing a career path I have bounced around. I originally wanted to become an animator or illustrator, but while taking art courses I longed to work with animals – and while taking veterinarian technician courses I longed to be doing art! Neither route succeeded, and it wasn’t until 2008 when Lucky, a Border Collie mix that had grown up with me since a child became ill at the age of 14. We had to make the heartbreaking decision to set him free from pain.
Lucky was the dog that opened my eyes to many things at a young age – rescue and adoption, training, dog sports, and animal artwork. Growing up, I must have doodled hundreds of dogs.
After the passing of Lucky, I always wished I had more photos of him. Not just snapshots, but a portrait to hang on the wall in his memory. I sketched one from a video still, but it was not the same as having a real photograph. When I got my new Border Collie puppy, Nova, I vowed that I would capture her growing up, and have images and memories of our wonderful time together. I have never stopped taking pictures since.
